She needed something
more creative than her housework,
more private than her daily duties as a mother,
more inspiring than balancing the checkbook.
So she built a pair of wings
from what she had at hand,
and waited for the wind to come up.

Sedna (with a full belly and a light heart)

For inquiring minds Sedna is an Inuit Goddess, Protector of Marine Animals. She is the first mermaid of my childhood, as I grew up in Nome Alaska. When I started stamping this face into clay I could think only of the faces of my youth, round beautiful faces ringed in parka fur. Sedna is 6 inches long from head to tail. She hangs on a wall with a loop of 10lb. fishing line (oddly appropriate). She is made from stoneware clay fired to cone 7 and brushed with iron oxide. Her wings are quilted cottons. She is especially relevant as our planet warms and the animals of the great northern habitats are threatened.

This Quilt is composed mostly from peices of well loved old clothing (grandpa's overalls, Sarah's blouse, my velvet skirt and favorite childhood pajamas...) I overlayed a photocopied image of myself and embelished with hand stitching, bead work, and free motion machine work.

These girls are made from felted wool sweaters. Their wings are quilted cotton. Their expressions are hand painted, hand stitched or hand felted onto cotton, wool, or suede leather. You can see a larger collection of these on my Etsy sight. http://tonguetied.etsy.com
